Abby's Story

Since earning my elite license, triathlon has become a significant part of my life. I am continually learning how God uses my triathlon journey to refine my relationship with Him. Triathlon has many ups and downs, which I am finding are all opportunities to grow. I have experienced some unfortunate injuries that kept me from training and racing; however, through these challenging times I learned to take on a different perspective.

My perspective on triathlon has changed in that it is more than winning. I have found that my triathlon journey can lend an empty feeling when my relationships/priorities are not right and my heart is not in the right place. I’ve come to realize that it also encompasses relationships and opportunities to glorify God. Success and who I am in Christ is not defined by results. Triathlon has become a platform where I can connect with others in a unique way as well as explore my God given talents and how I can best use them to serve Him.

Athletic Background

My athletic background originated with years and years of swimming! I swam for Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, which is where I was first introduced to triathlon through some of my teammates. I mostly swam individual medley events and 200 back and/or butterfly. I always strived to achieve the highest level I could with swimming.

When my career as a swimmer ended after graduation, that desire to stay active stayed with me! I started running and cycling casually and dabbled in triathlon while I worked towards my master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. At that point, God renewed the desire in my heart to train hard and find a new way to continue competing. After a few early successes with triathlon, I was encouraged to look into racing professionally--at that time I had no idea what that meant. God opened a door when I ended up earning my pro card in July 2010.

I am a full-time Speech-Language Pathologist in the public school system. My parents reside in my hometown, Grand Haven, MI, which is on Lake Michigan – great place to visit and train in the summer!  I have a younger brother, Nathan, who lives with his wife in Steamboat Springs, CO. and an older brother, Ryan, who lives in Grand Haven with his wife & 3 boys.
